Tips for Twitter Post Formatting
- Twitter/X posts have a 280 character limit.
- Clean formatting makes tweets more readable.
- Use line breaks to separate key points.
- Keep tweets concise, short tweets often perform better.
- Hashtags count toward the character limit.
How to format a tweet people actually read
- Put the hook in line one. It is the only line everyone sees in the timeline.
- One idea per line. Line breaks are free readability; use them between points.
- Cut filler until you are under 280 with room for a hashtag or a link.
- Paste your draft above, format it, and copy the clean version back to X.
Most unreadable tweets are not badly written, they are badly spaced: a paragraph blob pasted from a notes app, invisible characters from a word processor, double spaces after sentences. The formatter strips that out so what you paste into X is exactly what your readers see.
Frequently asked questions
How do I add line breaks in a tweet?
Press Return in the X composer, or write your draft with line breaks in this formatter and paste the result. Line breaks survive the paste; each one counts as one character toward the 280 limit.
Why does my tweet look different after pasting it?
Drafts pasted from Word, Google Docs, or notes apps often carry invisible characters and non-standard spaces. X renders them inconsistently. Running the draft through the formatter replaces them with plain text.
Do short tweets really perform better?
Usually. The timeline rewards being scannable, and a tight tweet with white space outperforms a dense paragraph of the same content. If the idea genuinely needs more room, a thread beats cramming.
Can I make text bold or italic in a tweet?
Not with the composer alone. Use our Twitter italics and bold generator to convert key words to Unicode styling, then paste them in like any other text.
