Mastodon
Publish to any Mastodon instance, with visibility controls and the inbox.
Mastodon is federated, so connecting starts with naming your instance. FoPost registers itself with that server and sends you to its own authorisation screen. Any instance works.
Connecting
Accounts → Connect → Mastodon, enter your instance's address, approve on your server. Tokens do not expire on stock Mastodon, so a healthy connection stays healthy.
What you can publish
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Post length | 500 characters |
| Media per post | Up to 4 items: images, video, or audio |
| Image size | 16 MB (JPEG, PNG, GIF, or WebP) |
| Video | MP4 or WebM, up to 99 MB |
| Audio | MP3 |
| Alt text | Up to 1,500 characters per item |
| Links | Count as 23 characters regardless of length |
These are stock Mastodon limits, and they are what FoPost enforces: an instance configured to allow more still gets posts within the stock bounds. Hashtags and a link are appended after the text. Thread chains are supported: blocks written as a thread publish as replies to each other.
Per post you can also set visibility (public by default), mark media sensitive, and add a content warning, the same controls Mastodon itself offers.
Video and audio go through the instance's processing; FoPost waits for it to finish, and a file the server is still chewing on after two minutes fails with a message to try a shorter or smaller file.
Analytics
Per post: favourites, boosts, and replies. Per account: followers, following, and post count. Posts made natively on your instance are included in analytics. Competitor tracking works: track any public account your instance can see.
Inbox
Mentions and replies land in the inbox, and you can reply from there. The reply is public and addressed to the author.
Deleting
Deleting the post in FoPost deletes it on your instance.
