Publishing to Instagram

Image posts, Reels, and carousels, and the limits on each.

Every Instagram post needs media: a post with no image or video fails before it leaves.

Post shapes

  • Single image: one JPEG, PNG, or WebP
  • Single video: publishes as a Reel, Instagram's shape for all new video
  • Carousel: 2 to 10 images and videos in order

Limits

LimitValue
Caption2,200 characters, hashtags appended after the text
CarouselUp to 10 items
Image size8 MB
VideoMP4, up to 300 MB and 15 minutes
Alt textUp to 1,000 characters per image
LinksInstagram posts carry no link: put it in your bio

Instagram fetches and processes video on its own side; FoPost waits for that to finish, and a video Instagram is still processing after a few minutes fails with a message to try a shorter or smaller file. In a carousel, one failed item fails the whole post rather than publishing it incomplete.

Not supported

Stories, and deleting a published post: Instagram's API offers neither. Delete in the Instagram app; FoPost's copy of the post keeps its history either way.
