Publishing to Instagram
Image posts, Reels, and carousels, and the limits on each.
Every Instagram post needs media: a post with no image or video fails before it leaves.
Post shapes
- Single image: one JPEG, PNG, or WebP
- Single video: publishes as a Reel, Instagram's shape for all new video
- Carousel: 2 to 10 images and videos in order
Limits
| Limit | Value |
|---|---|
| Caption | 2,200 characters, hashtags appended after the text |
| Carousel | Up to 10 items |
| Image size | 8 MB |
| Video | MP4, up to 300 MB and 15 minutes |
| Alt text | Up to 1,000 characters per image |
| Links | Instagram posts carry no link: put it in your bio |
Instagram fetches and processes video on its own side; FoPost waits for that to finish, and a video Instagram is still processing after a few minutes fails with a message to try a shorter or smaller file. In a carousel, one failed item fails the whole post rather than publishing it incomplete.
Not supported
Stories, and deleting a published post: Instagram's API offers neither. Delete in the Instagram app; FoPost's copy of the post keeps its history either way.
